The word "U-Boat" is a derivative of "undersea boat" which were developed and used by the Germans in both WW1 and WW2 to
interrupt the supply chain from the Americas to Europe in support of the Allied response to Germany's military ambitions in Europe. Although restrictions had been placed on Germany's overall fleet following WW1, by the start of WW2 it had sixty-five U-Boats ready for operation and these were deployed with devastating effect with 2779 ships sunk the U-Boats in the course of the war.
